Children of Joseph Fernandes & Clara
    1. Mary (Fernandes) [Barrows] Ledo
        born 1858, Fogo
    2. Rufena (Fernandes) Joseph

Children of Joseph Fernandes & Margaret DeRosa
    3. Manuel Fernandes
        born 1871, Fogo
    4. Frank Fernandes-Rose

    5. Carlotta (Fernandes) Rose
        born 1883, Fogo
    6. Joseph Fernandes Jr.
        born 21 Mar 1884, Fogo

The members of this family have been connected using many different documents.  The oldest siblings, Mary and Rufena, were born to Joseph Fernandes and Clara.  Both arrived to the US in the late 1880s and married men from Harwich in the late 1880s to early 1890s.  By 1910, they were living in Wareham, MA.  Manuel and Joseph were listed as having the parents Joseph Fernandes and Margaret DeRosa.  They arrived in the late 1890s to early 1900s and lived in Harwich for most of their lives.  Carlotta arrived to the US in 1903 and the passenger list describes her as having two sisters, Rufena Fernandes  and Mary of Onset (Wareham), as well as a brother named Frank Fernandes.  Her parents were also listed as Joseph Fernandes and Margaret DeRosa.  In addition, Frances (Fernandes) Gomes of Harwich was said to have been a sister but, further research needs to be done.

The confusion comes when looking at the two marriage documents for Frank.  In the first document, his parents were listed as Antoine Fernande and Margaret DeRosa.  In the second, his parents were listed as Joseph Fernande and Mary Rosa, assumed to be the same parents of the Manuel and Carlotta.  Frank Fernandes arrived to the US in the early to mid-1890s.  It is believed that Frank may have changed his last name from Fernandes to Rose in the mid-1900s.

Mary Fernandes (1858- ?)

Mary Fernandes was born ca. 1858 in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Joseph Fernandes and Clara[i].  She arrived to the US before 1894 and married Phillip Barrows on June 2nd of that year in Harwich[ii]  Philip died from consumption on 1902.  On May 2nd, 1903, she married the widower Manuel Querino Ledo in Harwich[iii].  According to the 1910 US Federal census, she was reported as widowed[iv],[v] but, Querino was alive and had remarried by 1905.  They may have just divorced and the widower status referred to her previous marriage.

Rufena "Josephine" Fernandes (1865-?)

Rufena Fernandes was born ca. 1865 in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Joseph Fernandes and Clara[vi].  She arrived to the US between 1885 and 1887.  She married Thomas Joseph on December 1st, 1888 in Harwich[vii].  Almost exactly nine months later, she gave birth to their first child, Nellie. The family was still living in Harwich in 1900[viii]. Her husband worked as a local grocer. The family moved to Wareham, MA between 1900 and 1910[ix][x]. Later records show her name as Josephine.  She and Thomas got divorced after moving to Wareham.

Manuel Fernandes (1871-?)

Manuel Fernandes was born ca. 1871 in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Joseph Fernandes and Margaret DeRosa[xi][xii].  He arrived to the US between 1890 and 1894 and settled in Harwich, where his parents were living.  He married Amelia Pena Roderick on June 23rd, 1894 in Harwich[xiii].  In 1910, Manuel was living with his wife, Amelia, and three children on Main Street in Harwich[xiv].  By 1920, his family was still living together but, Manuel was not reported. Amelia soon died in 1924.  Manuel remarried to the widower, Rosa (Monteiro) Gomes on August 1st, 1925 in Harwich[xv].  By 1930, Manuel was living with his new wife, four children, and four step-children[xvi].

Publishing!

I am currently working with a publisher to get my manuscript edited and published.  To offset the fees associated with publishing, I am looking for grants, donations, etc...  I want to make sure that my work is in the best quality and I know that whoever has to edit my book is in for the job of their lives.  Anyways, if all goes as planned, the book should be published this year.  What wonderful Holiday news!

The Bento Family

Julio Pedro Bento (1866 - 1937)

Alias: Reverend Julius Bento, Julio Pedento, Jules P. Bento, Julius Bevento,

Julio Pedro Bento was born ca. 1866 in either Maio or Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Pedro Bento and Maria R. B..  According to the censuses, he arrived to the US between the 1880s and 90s.  He married Francisca. Pena  on October 8th, 1896 in New Bedford; this was his second marriage. They had two sons, both probably born in New Bedford, before moving to Harwich by 1902.  According to the 1920 census, he had become naturalized in 1905.  In addition to being a reverend, Julio was a steward (1896), a restaurant cook (1910), and a cook on a merchant vessel (1920). While in Harwich, Julio and Francisca had one more son but, he died at a young age.  By 1920, Julio and his family had moved to Wareham.  Detailed information on where they lived was obtained from draft cards of their sons. He died on August 4th, 1934 and is buried in Centre Cemetery in Wareham.  References[i], [ii], [iii].

3.      Abraham Bento

b.      died 13 Mar 1902, Harwich  - Meningitis[viii]

James Julio Bento was a judge on the Wareham District Court (4th District in Plymouth County). His WWI draft registration card shows that in 1917, he was living at 441 (or 141) Twelfth Street in Onset, Wareham, MA.  He was an overseer of a cranberry bog for the Smith Fuller Hammond Company in Carver, MA. His mother was his contact person and she lived at the same address.  By 1928, he had gotten married to a woman named Flora and was now a lawyer.  When searching through the 1930 census, there was a James Bento living in New York; he was married (m. ca. 1926) and was working as a steamship cook.  In 1940, James was living in Wareham with his wife, Flora S. (b. 1905, d. 1986), and his children; his brother Antone was also living there.  A directory record was found that showed Julio Bento, Antone, and James lived in the same household  in Wareham in 1935.  James died in 1980 and is buried in the Wareham Centre Cemetery along with his wife and father[ix].  References[x], [xi], [xii], [xiii], [xiv], [xv].[xvi], [xvii].

Manuel Antone Jason (1868 – 1905)

Manuel Antone Jason was born between 1868 and 1873 in São Vicente, Cape Verde Islands to Antone Jason and Perpetua Angel Roderick.  He first arrived to the US in the 1880s and settled in Provincetown. He was a mariner and fisherman[i].   He married Mary A. Pena on December 25th, 1891 in Provincetown[ii],[iii].  Their first two children died very young and soon Mary Pena also died, on December 16th, 1904, from pulmonary tuberculosis.  Manuel died 4 months later, on April 15th, 1905 in Harwich, from the same disease[iv].  He was buried in Island Pond Cemetery.

With both parents gone, Joseph B. Lombard became the guardian of William and Jennie. The Jasons had lived next to a John Lomba, which may have been the same person.  According to tombstones in the family plot, William died in 1906 and Jennie died in 1909.  Records of their death have not yet been found.  In 1909, administration of Manuel’s estate was given to Joaquin DePena: possibly his father-in-law[v].
