Manuel Barlow may have been the first
Cape Verdean to live in Harwich, MA,
arriving there 1874[i]. He was born on September 15th, 1832
in Brava, Cape Verde Islands to Carlos Barlow & Mary Gonsalves[ii]. He married Mary Correia (p. 49)
ca. 1860s, probably in Brava, and together they had at least 5 children. According to the censuses, he arrived to the
US between 1854 and 1860; he was a laborer and worked in the cranberry bogs[iii]. One of his children was reported as being
born in New Bedford, while the others
were born in Brava[iv];
this suggests that Manuel and Mary may have travel between the US and Cape
Verde in the 1860s and `70s.. In April
of 1900, his wife Mary died in Rochester, MA. By June of 1900, Manuel Barlow was living
with his daughter Anna (Barlow) Rose and her family; Manuel’s son John was also
living there. Manuel died on April 15th,
1914 in Harwich[v] and was buried at Holy Trinity Cemetery.
