The members of this family have been connected using many different documents.  The oldest siblings, Mary and Rufena, were born to Joseph Fernandes and Clara.  Both arrived to the US in the late 1880s and married men from Harwich in the late 1880s to early 1890s.  By 1910, they were living in Wareham, MA.  Manuel and Joseph were listed as having the parents Joseph Fernandes and Margaret DeRosa.  They arrived in the late 1890s to early 1900s and lived in Harwich for most of their lives.  Carlotta arrived to the US in 1903 and the passenger list describes her as having two sisters, Rufena Fernandes  and Mary of Onset (Wareham), as well as a brother named Frank Fernandes.  Her parents were also listed as Joseph Fernandes and Margaret DeRosa.  In addition, Frances (Fernandes) Gomes of Harwich was said to have been a sister but, further research needs to be done.

The confusion comes when looking at the two marriage documents for Frank.  In the first document, his parents were listed as Antoine Fernande and Margaret DeRosa.  In the second, his parents were listed as Joseph Fernande and Mary Rosa, assumed to be the same parents of the Manuel and Carlotta.  Frank Fernandes arrived to the US in the early to mid-1890s.  It is believed that Frank may have changed his last name from Fernandes to Rose in the mid-1900s.

Mary Fernandes (1858- ?)

Mary Fernandes was born ca. 1858 in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Joseph Fernandes and Clara[i].  She arrived to the US before 1894 and married Phillip Barrows on June 2nd of that year in Harwich[ii]  Philip died from consumption on 1902.  On May 2nd, 1903, she married the widower Manuel Querino Ledo in Harwich[iii].  According to the 1910 US Federal census, she was reported as widowed[iv],[v] but, Querino was alive and had remarried by 1905.  They may have just divorced and the widower status referred to her previous marriage.

Rufena "Josephine" Fernandes (1865-?)

Rufena Fernandes was born ca. 1865 in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Joseph Fernandes and Clara[vi].  She arrived to the US between 1885 and 1887.  She married Thomas Joseph on December 1st, 1888 in Harwich[vii].  Almost exactly nine months later, she gave birth to their first child, Nellie. The family was still living in Harwich in 1900[viii]. Her husband worked as a local grocer. The family moved to Wareham, MA between 1900 and 1910[ix][x]. Later records show her name as Josephine.  She and Thomas got divorced after moving to Wareham.

Manuel Fernandes (1871-?)

Manuel Fernandes was born ca. 1871 in Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Joseph Fernandes and Margaret DeRosa[xi][xii].  He arrived to the US between 1890 and 1894 and settled in Harwich, where his parents were living.  He married Amelia Pena Roderick on June 23rd, 1894 in Harwich[xiii].  In 1910, Manuel was living with his wife, Amelia, and three children on Main Street in Harwich[xiv].  By 1920, his family was still living together but, Manuel was not reported. Amelia soon died in 1924.  Manuel remarried to the widower, Rosa (Monteiro) Gomes on August 1st, 1925 in Harwich[xv].  By 1930, Manuel was living with his new wife, four children, and four step-children[xvi].
