Julio Pedro Bento (1866 - 1937)

Alias: Reverend Julius Bento, Julio Pedento, Jules P. Bento, Julius Bevento,

Julio Pedro Bento was born ca. 1866 in either Maio or Fogo, Cape Verde Islands to Pedro Bento and Maria R. B..  According to the censuses, he arrived to the US between the 1880s and 90s.  He married Francisca. Pena  on October 8th, 1896 in New Bedford; this was his second marriage. They had two sons, both probably born in New Bedford, before moving to Harwich by 1902.  According to the 1920 census, he had become naturalized in 1905.  In addition to being a reverend, Julio was a steward (1896), a restaurant cook (1910), and a cook on a merchant vessel (1920). While in Harwich, Julio and Francisca had one more son but, he died at a young age.  By 1920, Julio and his family had moved to Wareham.  Detailed information on where they lived was obtained from draft cards of their sons. He died on August 4th, 1934 and is buried in Centre Cemetery in Wareham.  References[i], [ii], [iii].

His WWI draft registration card shows that in 1917, he was living at 441 (or 141) Twelfth Street in Onset, Wareham, MA.  He was an overseer of a cranberry bog for the Smith Fuller Hammond Company in Carver, MA. His mother was his contact person and she lived at the same address.  By 1928, he had gotten married to a woman named Flora and was now a lawyer.  When searching through the 1930 census, there was a James Bento living in New York; he was married (m. ca. 1926) and was working as a steamship cook.  In 1940, James was living in Wareham with his wife, Flora S. (b. 1905, d. 1986), and his children; his brother Antone was also living there.  A directory record was found that showed Julio Bento, Antone, and James lived in the same household  in Wareham in 1935.  James died in 1980 and is buried in the Wareham Centre Cemetery along with his wife and father[ix].  References[x], [xi], [xii], [xiii], [xiv], [xv].[xvi], [xvii].
